Comments and Considerations
Fist and Ultra seem fairly vanilla and may not need special rules, other than perhaps allowing Support Brothers for Fist to take the Veteran upgrade
Counterfire should be tested with a 3" fall-back in addition to the use of ranged weapons to strike back in melee
Perhaps allow Scar bikes to take the Veteran upgrade
Intention is to avoid custom units if possible. If custom units were to be designed:
>Templar would need Crusader Squads + Emperor's Champion
>Iron would need an Iron Father
>Battle Brothers in general could use Sternguard, Command Squads, and Command Squad Bikes; Sternguard have been worked out using the Veteran upgrade and everyone having the plasma gun upgrade
Certain limitations need to be taken with some units (see comments on testing Alphas below)
Thoughts from my testing the Alpha upgrade in a 2000 point game:
spencer: ...I built a 2000 point list of Alphas using the Grim cost for Scout, as discussed. It was very interesting how that Scout option informed my list building and directed me toward certain choices over others. All in all, led to some fun games, running them against Dark Brothers and then against Disciples of Change.
As Disciples of Change (and Dwarf Guilds, though not relevant here) are the other main armies that I play, the Alphas scout gave the army a significantly different feel from typical Havoc Brothers. I did allow for Alphas to take a couple units from the Battle Brothers list in part due to having vehicles for them that are not covered by the Havoc Tank profile and justifying it as “this is totally lore friendly”. However, similar to Dark Brothers’ Grim, I opted to not give Scout to every unit, e.g. vehicles, as it seemed that might be taking it too far with upgrade allowances. Thoughts on that?
Lobokai: I agree on the “not taking special abilities on everything”. Both in thought and in function
spencer: Much as I would like to Scout with an Infernal Brute and Infernal Stalker…seems like that would be just a touch overpowered…Like giving Scout or Ambush to Attack Walkers. ...looking at what can be given Grim in the Dark Brothers and then applying that to the equivalents in the Havoc Brothers seemed to work pretty well for me. Nothing was particularly over balanced - at least nothing for which I was not paying the price. Mutated Possessed with Scout were great, but the cost was accounted for.
I like my tea, as I like my nights: dark, endless, and impossible through which to sleep.
Just starting to get games in again... whew 2020 is a hobby killer (obviously, many worse things too). But I'll start testing things out ASAP and getting things up here. I'm in Illinois, so we're doing lockdown a little harder than at least our surrounding states... hopefully, things get better for it
