Empire Escort rule

For the Empire's Escort rule, if an enemy squadron is in range and has LOS to a squadron with Escort, but that enemy squadron also has a SHIP within its range and LOS, must the enemy only attack the squadron with Escort, or could it choose to target the ship instead? Thanks.
